The Allan Labor Government continues to help communities with limited transport options across regional Victoria, by funding an electric minivan for the Maldon Neighbourhood Centre (MNC).
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards has launched the new electric minivan, that will replace MNC’s existing 12-seater minivan, which will help the organisation save on fuel costs, supporting sustainability.
The organisation is already purchasing green electricity and has solar panels installed to meet its carbon neutral goals.
The $121,889 funding, through the Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program (FLTSP), will also be put towards charging equipment and power upgrades.
“We’re supporting local community projects like Maldon Community Bus to improve accessibility and address transport disadvantage," Ms Edwards said.
“Improving transport accessibility for the people in Maldon will greatly benefit the local community and local economy by improving access to vital services.
“Lack of public transport services can have a real adverse effect on communities, especially in regional Victoria, so we’re determined to fill any gaps we can.”
MNC, a non-for-profit community-based organisation, delivers community transport services to residents and community groups in Maldon, Baringhup and district, who experience transport disadvantage and social isolation.
The service allows residents access to nearby shopping precincts, health services and recreational activities as well as public transport. Offering a child-friendly outdoor space, meeting area, classroom and community garden, MNC also run the Baringhup-Maldon Community Bus, Maldon Market and Occasional Childcare service.
The new electric minivan is another step in the transition of Victoria toward a cleaner and more sustainable transport network as we push toward achieving net zero emissions by 2045.
The funding from the Labor Government is via the FLTSP which provides funding to local government and community organisations for small-scale transport projects, evidence-based transport studies, and funding to redesign and trial new ways in which transport services at a local level can be delivered in regional and metropolitan areas of the state.
