With room for everyone to hang out, the newly transformed Norwood Hill Recreation Reserve takes young people’s play options to a whole new level, backed by the Allan Labor Government.

Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards MP has officially opened the new space designed for teens, made possible by more than $238,000 from the Allan Labor Government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

With more and more families moving into regional centres like Castlemaine, demand for dedicated youth recreation facilities is on the rise.

Works have delivered a revamp of the existing courts, new parkour equipment, a hit-up wall, netball and basketball hoops, a soccer goal and an informal cricket pitch.

The improvements provide a great space for the young and young at heart to come together, test their skills, play casual games, and practice in a range of sports.

The new teen spaces complement recently completed playspace upgrades featuring an accessible carousel, expanding physical and creative play options for a wider age range of children.

There’s also a new adult exercise park providing equipment for free outdoor fitness activities, and enhancements to the reserve parklands.

“This community now has a reserve that truly caters for all. The new teen playspace is the final piece and means all locals have a place to keep active and enjoy the outdoors," Ms Edwards said.

“Castlemaine is home to a passionate and growing community of young people, and it’s wonderful to see they now have a reserve that meets the needs of people of all ages and abilities.

“Better facilities make it easier for Victorians to get back into local sport and recreation and live active and healthy lifestyles.”

The Victorian Budget 2023/24 is providing more than $213 million to deliver and improve community sports infrastructure and support initiatives that boost participation and inclusion in local sports clubs and organisations.

It’s part of the more than $1.9 billion invested in community sport and recreation infrastructure over the past decade.

Ms Edwards acknowledged the Mount Alexander Shire for its financial contribution of almost $120,000 towards the new teen spaces and the local community for helping to advocate for their new facility.
