Newstead footballers and cricketers can ramp up their training with new lighting at the Newstead Recreation Reserve thanks to the Victorian Government.

Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards MP has joined Mount Alexander Shire Council Mayor, Cr Bill Malty and club representatives to flick the switch and officially launch the new lights, made possible by a $250,000 investment from the 2021 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Sport is the lifeblood of Victorian regional communities. Up until recently, players at the Reserve were limited in their ability to train at night due to poor lighting.

This project has delivered bright 300 lux LED lighting, which opens the venue to extended training times and more development programs.

“Whether it’s summer or winter sports, the Newstead Kangaroos now have the flexibility to train and play at the time that suits them best,” Ms Edwards said.

“The new lighting provides a real incentive for local sports to offer more training and development.”

“Better sport and recreation facilities make it easier for Victorians to get involved in local sport and recreation.”

The new lighting is a real win for the clubs and the community, which now have more opportunity to safely participate in active recreation activities on the oval after dark.

The Victorian Budget 2022/23 provides a further $88 million for community sports infrastructure, and programs to boost participation in local sports clubs and organisations.

This brings the government’s investment in community sport and active recreation infrastructure to more than $1.6 billion since 2014.

Investments like these are all about creating jobs, stimulating local economies, and levelling the playing field by improving the health, wellbeing, and social outcomes for Victorian communities.

Ms Edwards acknowledged Mount Alexander Shire Council for its commitment and more than $119,000 towards the lighting with the clubs and community kicking in $10,000.
