The upgrade of the iconic Castlemaine Art Museum building has taken a major step forward with the appointment of the design team for the museum’s redevelopment.

Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards joined Castlemaine Art Museum Chair Mark Sheppard and Chief Operations Officer Leslie Gurusinghe to announce that a partnership of leading architecture firms Purcell Architecture and Brand Architects will lead the design of the project.

“With the design team now appointed, the Castlemaine Art Museum redevelopment is moving into an exciting new phase. This project will protect this treasured heritage building and improve access so more people can enjoy the collection for generations to come.” Said Ms Edwards

“I can’t wait to see this project take its next exciting steps.”

The Allan Labor Government has provided $6 million to support the redevelopment of the heritage-listed 1931 building, including conservation works, improved all-abilities access to the entrance, safeguarding of sensitive heritage elements and critical building and accessibility improvements including a new lift between the lower ground and ground floors.

Purcell, an international practice of architects and heritage consultants, has worked on the National Gallery of Victoria and the award-winning National Portrait Gallery, United Kingdom, while Brand Architects has completed many public and community projects.

The design team will work with Dja Dja Wurrung Enterprise DJANDAK to ensure the redevelopment embeds First Peoples history and heritage.

The project is being managed by Mount Alexander Shire Council in partnership with Castlemaine Art Museum and the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.

In addition to this infrastructure project, Castlemaine Art Museum receives operational investment through the Creative Enterprises Program.

Founded in 1913 and originally known as the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum, the Museum moved into its current building in 1931. It has one of the most important regional Victorian art collections including major and significant works from the 19th and 20th centuries, along with work by more recent modern and contemporary artists.

The museum also plays a significant role caring for cultural objects on behalf of the local Djaara and Dja Dja Wurrung community. The operations of the museum are also supported by Mount Alexander Shire Council.
