Maldon will mark 60 years as Australia’s first Notable Town on Sunday, 10 May 2026, with a welcoming day of community celebration, heritage experiences and family-friendly activities.

First recognised by the National Trust of Australia in 1966, Maldon’s designation reflects a long-standing commitment to preserving its historic character and goldfields landscape—an approach that continues to shape the town’s identity and attract visitors from across Victoria.

The milestone will be celebrated through Maldon: A Notable Day Out, held on Mother’s Day, featuring the Maldon Heritage Market, live music, heritage tours and local food across the township.

Visitors can arrive in style via the Goldfields Explorer steam train from Castlemaine, wander Maldon’s historic Main Street, or explore local attractions including the Maldon Vintage Machinery and Museum.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Member for Bendigo West, the Hon. Maree Edwards MP will attend and formally launch a community time capsule project at 1.30pm at Bank Corner, Main Street.

Led by the Maldon Museum & Archive Association, the time capsule will capture a snapshot of life in Maldon in 2026. It will be sealed later this year and opened in 2066 as part of the town’s centenary commemorations as a Notable Town. Further information is available via the Maldon and District Community Bank.
